Turn names and dates into rich stories that connect with your family and wider audiences. In this talk, Dai discusses how reflecting on our own lives in the present can help us do just that. Whether you love gardening, have a pet, live with disabilities, or are fascinated with history, this talk will show you how to incorporate your interests into your data recording, record analysis, and storytelling.

Dai Davies (they/them) is a professional genealogist, speaker, and writer with a passion for connecting people with their Welsh ancestors and telling complex ancestral stories. The foundation of this approach is Dai’s background in anthropology—MA and BA (Hons)—which they use to explore themes of social identity, culture, and history. Dai’s personal family history research is focussed on rural south Wales, the farming class, literary culture, religious nonconformity, and migration. The challenges of Welsh research, like searching for common names or the impact of place and history on the records, are something we can all learn from. You can find much of Dai’s work for free on their blog (www.GenealCymru.com) or join the more than 1.3 million people who have watched the GenealCymru YouTube channel.
