Almost 20% of Americans report that they have at least some German ancestry, which makes German-Americans the largest group in the country. Many of us have questions related to our German ancestry. Exploring German ancestors on the move from Pennsylvania, to North Carolina, to Indiana can be a highly revealing journey for many who are curious about their German roots. What drove these families and groups to move where and when they did? During Plantation Era America we find many 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation German-American families making hard decisions about where to settle, which would affect the future of the country, as well as foreshadow much of the history of the country in the decades to come.
Leigh Bowles is an educator, historian, and genealogist from Western North Carolina, who specializes in North Carolina history and genealogy, particularly that of Western NC. Having over 50% German ancestry has provided her with a desire to have an in-depth understanding of this group. Passionate about history and genealogy from a very young age, Leigh finds that the time never flies faster than when immersed in history, or when digging into her own family tree or the family trees of others. The satisfaction of finding ways around "Brick Walls" in family trees is a great pleasure for her. Another source of joy is sharing her findings and research, as well as helping others with genealogy questions.
