Join us for a FREE, virtual program on June 24th at 6:30 p.m. EDT!
Experiencing difficulties tracing your ancestors in Jamaica? Not sure what records are available in Jamaica, and which types will be specific to your search? Join us June 24 for the opportunity to learn what methodologies and techniques are needed to uncover your roots in Jamaica from an expert in the field. You will be equipped for the challenge of tracing your ancestors born out of wedlock including your enslaved and free people of color ancestors through the paper trail. Presented by Phillip Nicholas.
Phillip is a genealogy expert who specializes in Jamaican, Barbadian, and British Genealogy. He presented a Jamaican genealogy program for the Frederick County Public Library (FCPL) in April 2021 where he discussed the complexity of slavery. In addition, he is a Library and Information Science grad student at the University of Maryland, College Park and has experience processing and analyzing records in libraries and archives. Phillip earned his Master of Arts in Comparative & Transnational History from the College of William & Mary and wrote his thesis about the cultural transformations of slaves from the Gold Coast to Jamaica in the 18th century. With his background in history, he knows the value of understanding the historical context of an event and location when conducting genealogy.
