When Congress passed an “An Act to Regulate Passenger Ships and Vessels” in May of 1819, little did they know that they were creating a genealogical resource outstripped only by the federal census. These lists, submitted to customs collectors at entry points across the country, are often the definitive way to find exactly when your immigrant ancestor arrived in the United States.
