Come one, come all to Bookends. We will meet on the third Monday of the month to discuss non-fiction books on generally well-known disasters in U.S. history. As these books deal with disasters, please be aware that these books discuss events where people lost there lives, were injured, or were otherwise in great distress.
In 1889, a dam failed about 14 miles east of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, sending a fast moving wall of water towards the unsuspecting settlements in the valley. It is one of the worst disasters in U.S. history, and the first major disaster that Clara Barton's Red Cross provided relief for. Learn more in this month's featured title: Ruthless Tide: The Heroes and Villains of the Johnstown Flood, America's Astonishing Gilded Age Disaster by Al Roker.
