John Brown’s 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry is widely acknowledged as an event that catapulted the country toward civil war. This talk considers whether John Brown was in fact the meteor of the Civil War.

On August 19, 2026, at 6:30 PM, the Allen County Public Library is hosting Jon-Erik Gilot via Zoom.

John Brown’s 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry is widely acknowledged as a cataclysmic event that catapulted the country towards civil war. In this latest installment of the Allen County Public Library’s Lincoln at the Library program series, Jon-Erik Gilot presents “The Meteor of the War: John Brown’s Raid.” This program offers a background on Brown, an overview of the planning, the events of the raid and the resulting fallout, and considers whether John Brown was in fact the meteor of the Civil War. Join this free program via Zoom on August 19, 2026, at 6:30 PM.

Jon-Erik Gilot has worked in the field of public history for the past twenty years. He earned a degree in History from Bethany College and Master of Library & Information Science from Kent State University. A contributing historian at Emerging Civil War, his research has been published in books, journals, and magazines. His first book for the Emerging Civil War Series, John Brown’s Raid, was recently published by Savas Beatie. Today, he serves as curator at the Captain Thomas Espy Grand Army of the Republic Post in Carnegie, Pennsylvania, and works as a business archivist and records manager in Wheeling, West Virginia.
